The Island of Unique Holiday Experiences!
Karpathos is also known as the island of contrasts due to its special physiognomy that combines mountainous areas, picturesque villages, unspoilt beaches and crystal-blue waters. It is the second largest island in the Dodecanese complex and one that has kept its traditional countenance unchanged over time.
What to do in Karpathos
Small coves and beaches with crystal clear waters are formed along the entire eastern side of the island.
For all visitors who enjoy discovering new flavors, the traditional taverns and restaurants of Karpathos promise unique gastronomic experiences. The local cuisine is based on old recipes that have survived through time. Don’t miss out on the island’s handmade pasta “macarouni’, the rich variety of fresh fish that you can only find in Karpathos, like skaros and menoula, the local goat cheese “manouli”, stuffed pumpkin flowers, spicy onion bread, goat stuffed with liver, rice and herbs — a traditional recipe called “ofto meat”— and the great variety of traditional desserts like baklava.
There are approximately 50 paths in Karpathos that exceed 200 km and many of them pass through the traditional villages of the island. Discover magnificent mountainous landscapes, take a tour around the island’s picturesque settlements, gaze at the view of the Aegean Sea from above and learn about the cultural value of Karpathos. In addition to hiking, you can go climbing and mountain biking, two other popular activities for the travellers in the island.
Looking for a sportive way to spend the morning? Join a guided walk through the lush mountains or the nearby valley to explore the local flora and fauna. Prefer to sit peacefully while enjoying the mountain view? Get creative while making your own mosaic souvenir during a workshop.
If you want a vacation dedicated to natural beauty and alternative activities, then Karpathos is the right place for you. The areas of northern Karpathos and Saria as well as the central part of the island (Kali Limni, Lastos, Kyra Panagia) are of particular ecological interest and have been declared NATURA 2000 areas because of their natural wealth. There, you can participate in various activities such as bird watching and wine and cheese making!
Apart from crystal clear waters and endless sandy landscapes, the beaches of Karpathos offer their visitors many opportunities for adventure. The winds that blow from the beginning to the end of the summer season are ideal for water sports, like windsurfing and kitesurfing. Especially the area of Afiartis with its four bays is the right choice for all tastes. Makris Gialos is an ideal choice for beginners, Valia has the highest waves, while Vathia, where international competitions are organized, has the perfect combination of flat waters and strong winds.
Famous for its customs, Karpathos will impress you with its local festivities. Most of them take place during the summer months in many settlements of the island. In addition to live music and plenty of exquisite food and drinks, you will be amazed by the traditional Greek costumes of the locals and will dance with your heart! Visit the festivals of Menetes, Pyles, Aperi and Olympus on the 15th of August, or those of Pyles and Mesochori on the 8th of September and enjoy the unique celebrations.
If you prefer a quieter excursion with endless landscapes and natural beauty, then Saria is the place to visit. Situated in the northern part of Karpathos, opposite the capes of Vourgounta and Espoa, this uniquely beautiful islet was — according to mythology — created by Poseidon. Accessed by boat, Saria has a beautiful unspoilt beach with emerald waters where you can dive next to seclusive caves, visit the uninhabited village and admire the stunning surroundings.
